Is Friendster the "New" Black?

I just talked a friend last night who was telling me that Internet Site Dating was so passe. Supposedly, the "friend" sites are the in -thing. I'm talking about Friendster or Hi5. I have noooo idea if any of these work, but apparently a lot of people I know are meeting people that way.

Is it because people feel more comfortable going on these sites under the guise of being a friend, or meeting through a friend of a friend, and you're getting the more "normal" people of the bunch unlike the "vil you marry me now, my sweet jelabi" guys from Shaadi.

Um, I'm not sure, but whichever way you cut it, it just looks like good ol' Internet Dating to me..maybe I'll try it, maybe not, but before I make the leap it would be nice to hear if anyone else has had good or bad experiences on those sites..

I am on Orkut, but it sucks. Frankly, the so called "normal" people that we would expect to meet are not so normal after all...I mean I have had freekos trying to be over friendly/fresh wimme even when my status says "committed"...I mean for the love of God, can you just back off???

In any case, everyone's experiences are different. And I cannot deny that I re-established contact from a lot of long lost friends from school and college on Orkut, so its not all "freak show"....If you can tolerate their server, I guess its worth giving a try.

Also, it used to be invitation based (atleast a few months ago), so lemme know if you need one.

Nadz & Jax - Welcome! Good to know the chat sites are working for u. Thanks for the Optimism.

Sonal - Sounds like you've have a freak magnet on you as well (where did all the normal people go?). If I do go on, I'll definitely consider what you and Jax said about Orkut. Never heard of the site before but will definitely check it out..thanks!

Far and IGD - Thanks girls for the input. Far I'll check out your post on those sites.

It seems the general consensus here is that Orkut is a pain, but nothing so far bad with the other sites. I'll let you guys know if I try any of them.

Well, any social networking site is a place for men to hound women, and inundate your mailboxes with spam and "wana frienship me?" mails! Hehe! I dont know if the paid services like MSN dating are any better.

The only good thing about Orkut is I met lot of old friends I had lost touch with (and in some sense this is also the bad thing ;) And I got to make some really amazing people within my city.
Its really slow, but I stopped complaining.

The big thing here in San Diego is myspace.com. Very nice way to stay in touch with all our friends. They may move and their numbers may change, but this way you can still keep in touch.
