The Sleazification Of Bollywood

Do you watch Bollywood movies? Or are you wondering what one is? Either way, if you check out a few, you'll realize the relevance of this post. And maybe you'll be able to relate.

I remember growing up, and watching Hindi movies with my family. Those were the days, when you could actually still watch them with your parents..now, I feel like covering my eyes and wishing I could be absorbed by my couch!

Back then, the genre was very wholesome. The stories were non-risque, soaked in religion and culture and above all..everyone was fully clothed. (I think you'd be lucky if you saw a womans ankles..oh my!). You sat for the required 3 hours and came back with some cheesy moral of the story. Parents loved it and for us kids, sure we groaned at the fact that everyone in the movie always did the "right thing".. and I mean always! But it was our first exposure to the Indian Film world and it did its job of entertaining as well as teaching us.

Well, things have come a long way baby! Now the woman are scantily dressed, dancing around seductively while the camera pans their body (ick!). Yes, they still don't kiss..but I've seen Bollywood movies where they seem to be doing everything but that. I remember one movie that I ended up seeing with my family, where there were so many gratuitous scenes (like all of a sudden, it goes to this long carwash fantasy scene, where this woman has water sprayed on her while the suds are flowing down her body) which had nooooooothing to do with the story..that I was so disgusted I turned it off. I'm a pretty progressive chick, and I'm not saying I can't handle seeing skin..far from it. But my problem is with a film genre that seems to be based in moralistic "holier than thou" values, being filled with contradicting smut. Hypocritical? I think so.

I understand things are changing at a fast rate within our Desi community, and that's great. But really, is THIS modernization? To show woman just as sexual objects? Come on now. Media is a very influential medium. And when we (and the much younger generation) are exposed to seeing women this way, it leads to it just being submerged within our subconcious. It's like if you watch porn..sooner or later, that will influence how you look at women. I don't think Bollywood movies have moved into the porn realm..but they're not far from the limits of soft porn.

The sad thing is that India has become such an international force to be reckoned with, in all things technical and otherwise, that its hard to understand how the film industry hasn't caught up. Bollywood movies are watched all over the world and are produced more every year than any other industry (including Hollywood). Film makers are trying to keep up with this demand as well as modernization, I understand this. But with that massive production, they have a responsibility to not only us, as their audience, but to the world. Is showing a sea of flesh really necessary? If it had something to do with furthering the plot, I get it, but showing skin just to sell their movies (the whole "Sex Sells" ploy)..now thats low.

Its difficult to find a good Indian movie these days, and most times I come out feeling like I wasted my 3 hours watching a boring, played out script with rap video montages (all the desi girls dancing in them are exactly like rap hoochies).

The Yash Raj movies or anything decent are few and far between. Why can't we have more movies like "Black" or even more recently "Parineeta". Actresses shouldn't have to shake their thang to get Bollywood appeal. Besides that, wouldn't it be nice to see some real acting for a change instead of the usual batting her eyes and showcasing her beauty?? (consider the acting of Glenn Close or Jodi Foster versus Ashwairya Rai).

There is definite talent within the Indian acting community, but most of it is wasted in these sleazy films. There should be a higher regard for acting and the images of women being portrayed. Why can't we see women in lead roles, where they are shown as independent and multi-faceted, rather than just being a temptress or a domestic role model.

Sorry to keep ranting, but wouldn't you love to see someone who wasn't a former Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss India or Supermodel acting in these movies (and this goes for the recent male actors too). Sure, its eye candy, but thats about all. Movies shouldn't be just to create some unrealistic fantasy but to allow us to relate and see different characters (looks and all). They should bring in some actors with imperfection and show our society that the tall, fat, short desi women and men can be just as beautiful, or allow these models to strip away the caked on makeup and be "real" for once. Acting should be about developing into a character, not having the character developed on you.

I guess this bothers me, since I believe an Indian Woman is more than "T and A". She is intelligent, cultured, and powerful. She should have more of a purpose than to just "Get the guy, Get married, and Be a good Indian girl". Our movies & media should reflect this.

I truly hope, one day, Bollywood will realize this and create more of the great movies we love. Movies which are famous for touching us and bringing us the emotion of a great story. All without the sleaze.

Hey very true....I could go on and on about this...but just one thing to be said. I have now learnt to watch good as well as sleazy movies with no passion at all (except for SRK's movies!!!!!)I am just short of stopping to watch hindi movies altogether like my sister ...

Sleaze is not the only thing wrong with Bollywood. I hate most of the other aspects - The caricatured way South Indians,Sardarjis etc are depicted, the way Bollywood seems to only cater to the NRI audience by mixing
generous helpings of "Indian culture" with micro-mini clad heroines, mister goody-two-shoes chocolate heroes, braindead formula movies, strong doses of mush, rehashed lyrics about dil, jigar, nazar and kamar. Its a mind-numbing experience watching Bollywood movies. However, there have been a couple of good movies
lately. Black, for one was brilliant technically and performance-wise.

oh yeah, have u noticed how all the women in the movies r either papa's pretty girl or the poor ol' tragedy queen .. they're so caught up in all the drama, that no one seems to have any kind of career .. all college gals end up in love, n pretty much give up everything else after that .. the other women seem to have just the "get your guy asap" ambition.. progressive, this? i think not.

you bet..larger than life movies and larger than life videos..And those videos make an impact on how the coming generation grows. In India we dont even have an R or PG-13 type of rating or anything on some obscene videos..and hence even children grow up watching such videos....
And then if a woman wears swimsuit in Ms. India kind of competition there will be a big march of Mahila Mandals and political parties ..I wonder what they are doing now against all the vulgar portrayals in films..
And yes I agree with the hypocrisy things..The no kissing funda... Anyways...I have a lot to say on this..will take a new blog I guess;)

Sonal - I've been at points where I wanted to stop watching them too, but the few good ones keep giving me hope that better ones are on their way (my fingers are crossed)

Jax - I only looked at one bad point on the whole genre, but you're right..there's a whole slew of em! The caricature characters are pretty annoying. You have to wonder if the public just likes this crap since Bollywood isn't changing.

Mb - Glad you agree that women are definitely misrepresented in Bollywood Flicks. And their only purpose is to look hot or find a man. Pretty sad.

Sneha - You and me BOTH could go on foreva on this topic. Our society still is pushing for traditions to be upheld but at the same time they're fine with media that is dripping with sexuality. Insane?!..I think so.

IGD - Yes, Sex is the topic de jour in Bollywood. Aamir Khan is supposedly making a good movie, but his films are few and far between. Meanwhile, we have to deal with the Ex Supermodels showing off their bods..yippee.

Well, I think Bollywood mirrors Indian society to a good extent - There is a lot of hypocrisy in day to day Indian life (be religious, beat your wife etc ...) - And that sort of carries over to Bollywood.

And, ultimately, Bollywood is 99% about making money (and rightly so), and they have to make movies that make money. Unfortunately, there is not a big enough audience to watch a movie like "Crash" in India.

Indian movie makers can sit around making an art movie that 0.1% of the population understand, or they can make a "sleazy" movie that 99.9% of the population enjoys - What should they do ? Give people what they want ... Bollywood has to cater to everyone, from the rickshaw driver who is forking over 10 bucks for a floor seat (probably 15-20% of his daily earnings). He/She wants something spectacular, unbelievable and hopeful. Its all about dreams !

Ideamani - Good point. I do realize Bollywood was originally geared towards the working man in India. Its entertainment to them and provides them with an idealized fantasy. But since there is also a large market around the world and North America, we are also influenced by these movies. So I guess, though they do need to make money to keep these movies alive, they also have a responsibility to ALL of us. But I totally understand what you're saying..Its a complicated issue.

There are two Indias
The rich, well-educated, well-fed, well-bred India - This India has grown up reading Shakespeare's plays, Tennyson's sonnets, watching Hitchcock, Coppola and all the greats. They yearn for abstraction and subtlety.

The second India is the poor and uneducated - And they want things to be as unsubtle as possible, obvious plots, dazzling sequins ...

And there are three Bollywoods
1. The Monsoon Wedding, Fire, Mr&Mrs Iyer etc, ...
2. The Goondah Raj-type of bull crap

But the third category is important, because it straddles the line and makes everyone happy - A Lagaan for example - But it is so, so, so difficult to make those kinds. And its a fine line to walk, because if its too much of Category 1, the poor will reject it absolutely and vice versa.

So whats the safe bet - Make more Goondah Raj's !!

Ideamani - Thanks for another insightful reply:) And yes, you're right, you gotta have the lagaan in the movie, otherwise people aren't happy!? Geez.

Far - Lol. You probably ended up seeing lots of greasy Indian guys when you were really expecting Arjun Rampal look-a-likes!. Ah, welcome to reality girl. It sucks, I know:) Glad you're back btw.

Interesting blog, but I have a differing view on the topic. I don't think there's anything wrong at all in having sleaze in movies, not that I would wanna watch them! Every democratic country on earth that makes movies has some form of adult content in at least some of their movies. When there's a market for it, businesses (producers) would naturally tend to cash in. It's a perfectly healthy phenomenon in a democratic society where supply meets demand.

The problem however I think, is in the censorship model followed by Bollywood. Unlike Hollywood, which gives ratings like PG-13 etc, Bollywood's censorship totally cut off scenes which "they" consider in-appropriate. Different movies get different levels of censorship based on the mood of the censoring officer!

Now I agree that rating a movie is very different from enforcing the ratings. Enforcement should be a matter of personal discretion or in case of kids, a parental decision.

So the bottom line is: I very much disagree having sleaze in movies that appear family oriented. But in the long run, I do hope they move towards rating systems, which will hopefully keep everyone (the business and the mass) happy and hereby I end my rambling :P

Nox104 - Thanks for your voicing your opinion & Welcome.

I totally agree that most countrys have adult content in some of their movies.. but Bollywood has it in MOST of their movies.

Tons of skin while trying to persuade the viewers to believe in their so-called morals (ie being a good lil desi, no matter what). That bothers me more than seeing sexuality.

A rating system would definitely bring a happy ending to this story. Hopefully this is something Bollywood will adapt.
